Now that I am becoming more active with the details of the station, I wanted to pass along some information.
First, you may have noticed (or not) that over the past couple months the station is no longer streaming in the .mp3 format. It is now streaming in the FDK-ACC format. Specifically the MPEG 4 ACC LC format. This change was done for a variety of reasons.
Encoding of the music for streaming uses less than half the amount of data for similar or better sound quality. This allows for a good mobile experience for listeners who are sensitive to heavy data usage limits.
The format allows for sending the stream to Twitch.tv with the need for re-encoding. This improves the quality of the stream on Twitch greatly. By re-encoding .mp3 to Twitch the quality became so poor it was not listenable at times.
Most modern media players support FDK-ACC playback natively. Also most current web-based media players (HTML5) will support playback of FDK-ACC encoded streams. This allows for using one media player for both desktop and mobile use on the website.
It uses far less server resources to process the stream. In turn this save in my costs for server bandwidth expenses.
As far at how the station has been doing with listeners over the past couple months.
Listener hours (number of listeners multiplied by the number of hours they each listened) is just short of 33,000 listener hours per month. This does not include listeners who listen on Twitch.tv as there is no way to track total hours as of this time on Twitch.tv.
Sixty percent of the listeners are from Japan. And those listeners from Japan listen for sixty-five percent of all listener hours. The next country is the USA with seventeen percent of the listeners and seventeen percent of the listener hours. Third place is Germany at four percent of our listener with six percent of the total listener hours.
Over the past six months there have been listeners from 179 different countries. The average listen time every time someone tunes in is 20.5 minutes. This includes people who listen for hours at a time along with those who tune in for just a couple seconds. The total number of people who have tuned into the station during the past six months is 62,500.
The amount of data streamed from our server in the past 30 days is about 950 Gigabytes. This compares to over three Terabytes per month before the change from MP3 to FDK-ACC stream encoding. A savings of two thirds the bandwidth used.
So, that gives you a bit of inside info concerning what is happening with the station. Look for changes, as always, in the coming months.
Just a quick update as to what is happening with the stream.
It has been awhile since I have done or said anything concerning the direction of the stream. I want to remove any fears that the station is going away any time soon. In fact now that some personal issues are in the past I will be able to put some more focus on the station.
I will be making some updates to my acquisition of new music.Over the past six months I have not been able to keep up with obtaining many new songs from all the shows. The reason is mainly due to my personal health and lack of ability to dedicate enough time to keeping things updated. It has also been because of costs. Music costs money and my funds geared towards the station needs had to be curtailed due to other needs in my life.
I am hoping for two things in 2019 in terms of getting the music you want to hear, and to get it in a timely manner. First, I hope to be able to focus more personal resources to the music. This depends upon many unknown factors, but I hope to be able to perform better in 2019. Second, I hope that you, the listeners, can help in some small way in providing the financial resources to help with the expense of obtaining new music.
I hope you will be able to see it in your heart to help support this station in 2019.
Finally, I am going through the though process as to providing a live, on camera, show in 2019. There are many things to consider for this but I hope to roll out something in early 2019.
I hope you all have a great holiday season and a wonderful new year.
